it turns out the reason why I couldn’t get a decent picture of this piece was not only because of the bad lighting but also because I was still dissatisfied with the drawing. I stowed away my impatience and made some adjustments. Finally, it look s like a solid, finished piece.

A Ghost is Born

Initially, I was gonna entitle this piece “White Washed Ghost”, but it sounded too excessive.  Ever since I saw Kazuki Takamatsu’s work and Taylor White’s “They Lied About Death”, I wanted to challenge working with a dark background. With this piece, I treated it like a giant sketchbook page. Very little was planned, I think I’ve changed the drawing at least three times.  When I’m doodling in my sketchbook, I don’t have to take them too seriously, so the energy flows much more naturally and enjoyably even if I reach a point where I don’t know what I’m doing. I wanted to see if I could recreate that joy in the process on a larger scale.

My spray fixative ran out on this piece. I’m reaching that sad, desperate artist moment where all my supplies are running out. I still have pencils and good papers (just on a smaller scale), so mind as well make use of them.

Two of Three

it’s taking me forever to take a decent picture of one of the three pieces. I usually like updating in bulks just to get it over with, but my brain’s ready to fry from technical difficulties. At least updating a post will make the struggle seem slightly worth it. Anyways, here are two new pieces up on the website:

I’m (Not) Open To Falling From Grace

A re-revisited piece since the first revisit didn’t please me enough. Adding the two corners make the pieces more compositionally sound. Also, it looks like she’s about to lose it because the hair’s “curse” is closing in on her. Like I’ve probably said before, the title comes from “6 Underground” by Sneaker Pimps except I slipped in the “(Not)”.

Knot Me

The black border’s a bit of a nuisance, but oh well, it’s there.  I’ve always wanted to do another hanging “Hair Monster” piece, so working on this one was a lot of fun. However, next time, I should find a bag of something  and have it suspended. That way, I’ll be able to use that as reference for a more convincing look. I’m relatively happy with this piece, but it still looks like it’s awkwardly defying gravity.

Here’s what I do have for the third piece that I can’t seem to take a decent picture of. Honestly, I was more excited about finishing this piece than the other two since I decided to go in a slightly different direction. I will elaborate when the camera and my lack of photo skills start to cooperate.

Well, I’ve managed to run out of that giant roll of paper. I guess it’ll give me an excuse to do more studies and see what I can do with these guys on small to medium scale. Working large was important for me because I want the viewers to encounter this creature whether it’d be like an animal at a zoo or a stranger at the subway station. I’ll probably be posting studies and sketch compilations for a while. Unfortunately, I’m a desperate point where bills have to come first before the next project.

p.s. I’m also trying to apply for the JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) Program. Trying to get my shit together plus a full-time job is gonna be the death of me. Hopefully, it will all be worth it.
